Cleaning Rivers, Changing Lives.
In the heart of our communities, a remarkable group of men and women from Tshikambe in Vhembe district is leading the charge against environmental neglect, with compassion and determination, they are taking to the streets and rivers to reclaim our natural spaces from the scourge of pollution.

Armed with gloves and passion for the planet, they’re removing dirty plastic bags, cans, disposable nappies, broken bottles and other debris that’s choking our waterways.
These unsung heroes are not just cleaning up our environment, they’re restoring dignity, preserving our heritage and inspiring a movement of care and responsibility.
V/E: “What gets you up in the morning to tackle the tough job of cleaning up the environment, often going unnoticed and unpaid? Is there a personal story or experience that sparked this passion within you”? TGT: ” It’s simple, we love our environment, says one of the women, her voice filled with conviction “It’s heartbreaking to see the damage we’re causing. Besides littering our rivers, some even wash their cars right in the rivers, causing oil spills that harm the very creatures that call it home. These rivers are our lifeblood and we’re determined to protect them.”
Their efforts are having a ripple effect, quiet literally. The two rivers, Ngwedi and Mutshindudi they’re cleaning, flow into neighboring villages, providing them with much-needed clean water, improving health and livelihoods for countless families.

What’s remarkable about this group’s efforts is that they’re doing it without any formal training or proper protective gear. No worksuits, masks or atleast boots for these heroes – just a determination to make a difference. They are working in an environment fraught with hidden dangers like crocodiles and snakes.
Their bravery is a testament to their commitment to the cause, and it raises questions about the lack of support for community-led-environment initiatives. Despite these challenges, the group remains undeterred, inspiring others with their selflessness and dedication.
