Located along the 451 Garden Route in Unit D, Thohoyandou, the Thohoyandou National Botanical Garden is one of Limpopo’s most breathtaking natural attractions. Among its many highlights is the spectacular 250-metre wooden boardwalk, a peaceful pathway that allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you are a nature lover, photographer, tourist or simply looking for a place to relax, the boardwalk offers an unforgettable experience that keeps visitors coming back.

The journey begins the moment you step onto the beautifully designed wooden walkway. One of the best things about this attraction is that access to the boardwalk is completely free once you have entered the garden. As you stroll along the path, you are welcomed by the soothing sounds of birds singing in the trees and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze. The calm atmosphere instantly creates a sense of peace, making it an ideal escape from the busy pace of everyday life.

The boardwalk crosses the Mbovane River, and the view and sound of waterflow is incredible.

Beneath the boardwalk lies a remarkable collection of ancient cycads, some of the world’s oldest living plant species. These fascinating plants, together with the towering indigenous trees surrounding the walkway, create a lush green canopy that provides shade and a refreshing environment throughout the walk. Every step offers a new perspective of the garden’s rich biodiversity, making it an excellent place to appreciate South Africa’s natural heritage. There are several benches around the hiking trail and on the boardwalk where you can sit and unwind while reading a book, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, or listening to the beautiful sounds of birds.

One of the most impressive features of the boardwalk is its elevated position, which provides visitors with a panoramic view of the garden’s beautiful picnic area. From above, the neatly maintained green lawns stretch across the landscape, inviting families and friends to relax, enjoy a picnic or spend quality time together in a peaceful outdoor setting. Children have plenty of space to play while adults can unwind in the tranquil surroundings.

The boardwalk has also become a favourite destination for photography enthusiasts. Its natural beauty, elegant wooden structure and scenic forest backdrop make it the perfect location for memorable photographs. Many couples choose this picturesque setting for wedding and engagement photo shoots, where the combination of sunlight filtering through the trees and the vibrant greenery creates stunning images that capture life’s special moments.

Beyond its scenic beauty, the boardwalk offers an engaging educational experience where visitors can observe variety of wildlife along the way. Common dwarf gecko (Lygodactylus capensis) can often be seen in pairs, while butterflies and rain-tree spittlebug (Ptyelus grossus) and monkeys add to the biodiversity of the garden. The boardwalk provides an excellent opportunity to explore nature and learn about the relationship between plants, insects and other wildlife. It is an ideal destination for school groups, university students, researchers and anyone interested in biodiversity, nature and environmental conservation.
